Description:

Calcium propionate (also called calcium propanoate) is a chemical compound, whose salt propanoic acid is related to acetic acid, which in turn derives from propionic acid and ethanol. It’s used as an anti-fungal agent in food production, particularly cereals and bakery products, as well as cosmetic products including lotions and creams that help reduce the occurrence of dandruff, hair loss, acne and other conditions of the skin by controlling microbial growth on its surface. This article details how to go about starting a business manufacturing this important additive to the food industry.

Introduction:

Calcium propionate is a colorless, odorless crystalline powder. It has two significant uses: first, it is widely used as a preservative in food products, especially baked goods. The second major use of calcium propionate is to control mold growth on stored grains and animal feedstuffs. In addition to these primary areas of application, calcium propionate can be found in other products such as cosmetics, detergents and personal care products. As a result of its widespread use, there are many producers of calcium propionate around the world. This makes it possible for companies that want to add calcium propionate to their products to purchase from multiple suppliers without having any single source monopolize supply.

Uses:

A widely used antifungal preservative in liquid soaps, detergents, cosmetics and toothpaste. Calcium Propionate effectively controls mold growth in these products, protecting users from fungal infections like athlete’s foot. It is also used as an anti-mold agent to prevent decay and spoiling of foodstuffs such as cheese and butter. In some countries, it is added to poultry feed to control mold on chicken carcasses. In addition, it has been shown that Calcium Propionate can be effective against certain human pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.

Business Plan: Calcium Propionate

Calcium Propionate is an organic compound with chemical formula of CH3CO2Ca. This colorless solid is used in food, medicine and personal care products. It is produced by reacting acetic acid with calcium carbonate under basic conditions. Calcium propionate can prevent mold from growing on cheese and meat products, thus preventing spoilage of foods that may lead to food poisoning. In addition, it is also used as preservative for some cosmetic products such as nail polish remover and hair spray.

Manufacturing Process:

Calcium Propionate is produced by reacting 98% of Propionic acid and Calcium Carbonate. It can also be produced using Sulfuric Acid as well. The reaction of acetic acid with Calcium Carbonate gives us Calcium Acetate and Hydrogen Gas as a result, which further reacts with Acetic Acid in presence of Sodium Acetate to form Calcium Propionates. The process is carried out at an optimum temperature of 140-160 °C for about 30 min. After that, it undergoes filtration, washing and drying.

Calcium Propionate is used as food preservative in breads, cakes, cheese products etc. It has a characteristic odor of old cheese or burnt sugar and it’s added to various types of foods where mold growth is undesirable such as baked goods like breads and cakes; processed cheeses; beverages like beer; frozen dairy desserts; dehydrated potatoes; etc. It can also be found in pharmaceutical preparations as an excipient for tablets and capsules.

Market Size:

The calcium propionate market was valued at USD 277.1 million in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6 percent to USD 363.3 million by 2023. Calcium propionate market expansion is fueled by factors such as rising demand for clean-label food products with longer shelf lives and calcium propionate's cost-effectiveness when compared to alternative preservatives. Food safety and shelf life rules and regulations have made it difficult for food and feed processing businesses to formulate the proper combination of chemicals and preservatives without compromising product quality, which is a major limitation for the calcium propionate market.

Consumers have been more aware of the value of health in recent years, and the market for calcium propionate is expected to rise at an unprecedented rate as a result of the increased demand for nutritional products. Consumers have shown a preference for natural and organic foods over synthetic foods, resulting in increased demand for calcium propionate. Calcium propionate has been used as a natural component in the food business since it is safe to ingest. Furthermore, to ensure food quality and safety, the food business employs modern technology such as MAP, bacteriophages, and different preservation processes.

Furthermore, calcium propionate is utilized as a feed for animals, and the market is growing due to increased applications in the food preservative sector. Apart from the numerous applications of calcium propionate, it is also relatively cost-effective when compared to other alternatives such as sorbates, sulfites, and so on. Because of these factors, the calcium propionate market is expected to rise at an exponential rate.

Benefits of Starting Calcium Propionate Manufacturing Business:

There are many benefits to starting a calcium propionate manufacturing business. You will be able to manufacture and sell your own brand of cattle supplements and additives, meaning you will also be able to name it. This can create extra revenue for your business when you sell these products as well as allow consumers to trust you. When people know what they are buying, they feel better about their purchase and trust your company more than if they just bought an unknown product off a shelf in a store. In addition, there is no need to worry about competition with your own supplement line because there is only one option on the market that is made by you. The only thing you have to worry about is keeping up with demand and getting enough ingredients from suppliers.  As long as you do those two things, you should be fine.
